Really Rooney should have only gotten a yellow. The stamp looked accidental and the push should have merited a booking, but to blame Ronaldo is misguided. He was complaining to the ref as all overpaid footballers do but I don't think even he was expecting Rooney to be red-carded. But I don't think that would have made any difference. After Rooney was sent off England were left with limited options up front thanks to Sven's selection, and again a pile of English talent not fulfilling their potential. I mean seriously 3 wins and a draw against the "might" of T&T, Paraguay, Ecuador and Sweden. They were hardly going to be world beaters. But seriously bad luck England were the better team throughout and deserved to win (and win a place against France/Brazil... ah well!). Rooney was very badly treated, and England... START SCORING IN 90 MINUTES! Then you won't have to do bloody penalties again.

And I bet you were expecting a stream of anti-Englishness. Well f*ck you stereotype!

I suppose I do agree with go_england to a degree. However Rooney should have known better than to rise to the bait. He's been playing at top level for 3 years now, so should have learned a few lessons by now, esp. in an important game like that. Still stand by the argument that he should have been given a yellow.

let me guess; it's either the fault of the portugese living in Thetford, or stupid referees! they didn't win. get over it folks.

Thank God there are more to life than stereotypes! I was beginning to lose heart as it seemed that no one but small-minded, illiterate racists (of various nationalities) posted football themed questions on Yahoo!answers.

As for the England game...well the standard of play wasn't amazing...the Argentinian ref was probably bribed, and one little Rooney wobbly was all he needed...
But for once the team managed on 10 men and without Beckham or Rooney lasted till penalties...which was longer than Brazil did against France...so better than Brazil...LOL...I guess there's some consolation for the lack of goals! XD

For all the media hype...the team have been very weary looking and lacklustre. Rooney especially was a bit of a damp squib.

So, fortunately I switched channels to catch Andy Murray cream a top seed American at Wimbledon. Far more satisfying result! XD

you have a point, and I totally agree with the Ronney getting a red card was too much, it only should have been a yellow, but as soon as England went into penalties I knew we had lost... we aren't very good at them!

i totally agree with the first part. but dont u think ronaldo pretty much played an evil considerable role in this? he more than any1 else shud know rooney's temper. wat he must have said pissed the hell out of rooney. and that sly wink frm ronaldo when rooney was sent out? i felt that was horribly wrong.....
