My CD/DVD Burner keeps failing anywhere between 25% and 50% through burns. I have downloaded the latest firmware. Is there any other software or tweaks I can do to burn successfully?

My Specs:
Dell Dimension 4300S
Sony 700MB CDR
HP DVD Writer 840B
Windows XP

I went to the website and downloaded latest firmware driver update. Still cannot successfully burn.

It can be a few different things, but I found this problem myself when I had Windows downloading automatic updates. It updated my bios/system, but because I didn't update my burning software, my Cd's just wouldn't burn anymore, and would fail about 30% into it. Since I didn't really like the burning software anyway, (Roxio), I reverted back to my old burning software Nero, which worked fine with whatever windows decided to update. (this is why I never have my computer set up for automatic updates anymore)
Just make sure that if your system updates, that you also regularly update your other hardware to keep everything current.
Unfortunately with the PC/Windows, you never know where conflicts will arise.

A good burning software I recommend is Ashampoo Burning. It's 100% free and can be downloaded here: http://j.mp/1sW2tKy

If you want to create a DVD that works on a common DVD player, you definitely need a burning software. Copying the files of the movie as is won't work (If you do so your DVD player will not be able to play the video/movie properly). Ashampoo is a good option for every "burning need". It's reliable and professional, It can be used both for CDs and DVDs and it's very easy to use.

How fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have? Are you running any other applications in the background while you're attempting the CD burn?

Buring CDs can be extremely system resource intensive. You should close all other programs running in the background and make sure that you max out your system page file/virtual memory to make sure you have as much free RAM as possible.

Go to Start --- Control Panel --- System --- Advanced Tab --- Performance Settings Tab --- Advanced --- Virtual Memory

Max it out. The system will tell you what the maximum is that you can allocate.
