Well I think England will blame Cristiano. The truth is Rooney should have kept his temper in check. He could not get away with pushing Cristiano.
Actually, while most English fans must be cursing Cristiano, the truth is he did nothing to instigate the ref. Wayne was obviously frustrated. He is a very good player. He was trying real hard. Things were just not going his way. He lost his cool and pushed Cristiano. He obviously did not get Carvalho on the groin because of frustration. That was purely accidental. But he pushed Ronaldo out of frustration.
Bottom line: England will curse Ronaldo for losing against Portugal.

I certainly don't think he will get the reception that Beckham did after 1998 world cup. Reasons are:

1) Rooney had too much responsibility put on his shoulders while he was fighting injury
2) This was exacerbated by Sven only picking 4 strikers
3) Further exacerbated by putting Rooney in incompatible formation (4-5-1)
4) Lead up to World cup was full of stories of fighting over decision on his fitness between Ferguson and Sven.
5) Too much media focus on him.
6) Nobody has seriously done anything to deal with his temper tantrums - which at high level games/tournaments will never be tolerated.
7) His red card was deserved, but I do think it was accidental based on slow motion re-runs whereas Beckham's kick out at Simeone in 1998 was blatant petulance - that is never easily forgiven when it is a crunch game.

Personally, this is the best England team I've seen in this World Cup. They weren't playing long balls, they were knocking the ball around on the ground and they were getting everyone involved. Sweden played their hearts out today and we I give them alot of credit for their efforts. I think Wayne Rooney should have played the whole 90 mins, thats the only mistake Sven made today. Proof: None of England's goal came from a set piece. That shows they can beat any team on any given day and they never gave up. Bring on Germany or Ecuador.....God Bless the Queen LOL - I'm actually American

There is no doubt that their will be an element of soccer armchair critics who will take great delight in belittling Wayne Rooney... he`s a tough young man who knows he`s got some weight to throw about ,but he really works for his position on the England team even if he`s not scoring he`s always moving around looking for an opportunity. These facts are also evident in his Man Utd.actions ,he`s on a roll ,and he`s a hot player ,if Man Utd put him on the Market he`d probably break the transfer amount record ..but I know and Man Utd knows he`s a good `un and I think he`ll stay with Man Utd for quite a while.even after his contract....I think so ,I know so ,I`m a fan of his .Some will blame him but I say NO it wasn`t his fault .

Who taught England how to PK ? That was horrendous. Ricardo knew where every shot was going.
But they played to slow from the beginning. Only picked up the tempo after Rooney decided to watch the game. Can't blame him for being frustrated the way they held back so much.
Fire the coach. He should've been telling those boys to run and get down field. Didn't happen until they were short handed.

Have England blamed Beckham for losing against Argentina in 98?

Why should we?It was C. Ronaldo`s fault Rooney was sent off anyway!
Besides we lost on penalties - there`s no evidence he`d have scored even if he`d stayed on - you might as well blame Beckham for breaking a toe-nail and crying LOL.

Possibly - Just like in France 98 when beckham was sent off for retaliating against Diego Simeone - Even tho simeone deserved kicking a lot harder! Unfortunately.fans need a scapegoat & it's easier to vent at out own player rather than the ref - although I expect (& HOPE) that C Ronaldo is going to cop a lot of abuse when he returns to Manchester...

I think they should because this is what happened to Beckham in the world cup of 1998 and he definitely got blamed so why shouldn't Rooney. He needs to really control his temper, or he won't be helping himself on the field

I blame the kickers in the shoot-out, what a pathetic bunch of shots. Compare the English shooters with the Germans yesterday, and you will see what I mean.
