1) Exponential growth
2) Medicine--people (in many parts of the world) are living well into their 90's
3) Tremendous growth, despite efforts to retard it, in China; great population growth in India; in South America, etc.
4) Less severe pestilence and disease that formerly wiped out large masses of population.
On the other hand, there is still world hunger, filthy water and terrible disease.

Will if you live in a country like the philipines where the Catholic chruch runs the country or it seems like it does. You will find no form of birth control in that nations. Catholics believe that G-d will take care of them and that they should do what the bible tells them to do go forth and mulitply in fact the most poorest countries in the world seem to countries who main Christian Church is the Catholic Church that's one reason why we have a population growth.
Another factors that would case the doubling of the world's population in a relavtively short period of time is to have a war. The biggest war of the last century was World War 2 caused a big growth of babies to be born in Europe and North America.
One more factor you can add is a country economy. If an countries's economy is growing so will it's populations because there is enough money to feed children probably.

The main factor is the previous doubling of the world's population which more quickly chronologically compounds itself each time.
World famine, wars, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and other catastrophes no longer exceed or 'keep pace' with population growth.

for every species, there is a carrying capacity. this is represented by "k" and is the maximum population size WITHOUT environmental damage. the human "k" is around 1.5 billion, the current human population for today, according the the us census bureau is 6,600,115,810. sidestepping "k" is easy with:

better medicine, increase of promiscuity, people in various countries following the catholic guidelines to not use condoms, but they still have as much sex as they used to, cleaner water, more food, better housing, sewage treatment, irrigation, fossil fuels, and refrigeration.

as a result of all this sidestepping, we've caused global warming, high amounts of pollution, and deforestation.

More people having babies. More births then deaths. Better medical care, better nutrition. Long ago people died earlier, and not as many babies lived to age 1.
