I taught myself, sometimes based on how other bands play, but teaching yourself is always cooler.

hey i hope this helps :-)...i play guitar and you don't need professional help to learn how to play....learn how to do chords and how to switch fast and keep your thumb in the center of the back of the neck ..get a good book with songs to play i'm sorry i don't really know any sites to help....i'm sure theres ones that have chords though...theres a computer cd that really helped me and its called "Learn to play Guitar by Alfred Publishing"

Learn the music you like. Take the time to practice, practice, practice. Learn chords. Pick up guitar tab books with the music you like. Trust me, thats how I did it.

You just need to practice with someone who plays. A book can teach you how to chord but you can't learn to play from a book. I think there are video's for it, though I don't know any. They would be better than nothing.

um...tabs are always the best thing
ultimate-Guitar.com is my fave site...also plain sheet music from your local music store has the corresponding tabs with illustration above the music
before you start get yourself a book of the major guitar chords and learn a few (G, C, D, E, Em, A, Am<---basics)

pro help is the best way to go, but, try learning scales and understanding how music is made
this will make you so much better than people who just play a song from a tab

try to play by numbers first then try musical notes you can find
a lot of sites on the internet that have play by numbers.
