I've just moved house and for reasons beyond my control, I had to find other homes for my two cats.
Don't panic - one went to live with my next door neighbour at the old house as he was a roamer and knew the area (And he gets spoilt rotten there) and the other one's gone to live with my mum. Now, I want something to look after.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the best thing is to have? It needs to be something that can stay in my room as the others in my house don't want any pets but also needs to be something that is quite low maintenance as I work odd hours. Any ideas anyone???????

I looked after my cats perfectly. However, the people I lived with turned nsty and I had to move out of the house. I couldn't take them with me as I wasn't allowed them in the new place and needed to move out for my own safety. It broke my heart to do so but I can still have both of them back if I choose to at a later stage. I still talk to my old next door neighbours and of course I stilll see my mum so I know how both cats are doing. I did not abandon them because they were too much of a committment. I had to do it for my safety and theirs.

How about a fingerpuppet?
Easy to make, VERY easy to maintain, and you dont have to feed them!

If you must own something I'd recommend a fish, anything else requires too much cleaning up after and personal attention, bonding. Otherwise if you have the access adopt a whale or dolphin, or some other animal that you feel a connetion with, on-line. You could also volunteer some time at your local animal shelter or local Humane Society. This will give you some interaction, allow you to love and be loved by animals without the cost or care. Then when you get an appropriate place you can have your own pet. Volunteering is very rewarding and you get so much more in return than you give. I hope you will give it a try.

If the people you share a house with don't want pets your options are limited. Birds will sing or squawk, fish have their own smells and sounds if you don't keep up on the maintenance. Perhaps it would be best to skip pets until you can afford your own place and have enough time and money to take care of them. Then you can get an entire zoo if you like. (Assuming you own your property and are still within zoning laws.) In the meantime you can go visit your mum. She'll like that anyway.

A rabbit, ferret or guinea pig would get lonely and your room would be too small for them. Plus they live too long and you might end up having to rehome them too.
Rats are great but you must train them to use a litter tray, clean that out every day and scrub the cage out every week because they have a strong scent.
Birds can be long lived and also need company, its not fair to keep one.
A fish would make most sense; the tank can be therapeutic if you set it up properly and make it attractive.
Your life is unsettled and you've already bought then got rid of two pets. A cat is a long term commitment; they can live for up to 18 years. Its not fair to go out and get another long lived pet until you're settled.

How about a beta fish? They're very low maintenance, and they're very pretty. Of course, you can't cuddle with them and play like you can a cat. I would also recommend a hamster, but they're not as low maintenance as you'd think. You must keep their cages clean, and they sleep a lot in the day time... not exactly playful. You could also look into getting a ferret. I hear they're fun pets. I don't know how high maintenance they are, though.

Get a white rat. My wife and I are cat lovers now(so no rodents) but we had a female rat and she was brilliant. She had an open cage so that she could run around the room but there was no mess, house training came itself. She was friendly and affectionate, loved to give kisses.

chinchillas are cute, low odour, facinating to watch, and they make this amazing purring sound, and they can live in a cage for hours and when u get home from work, if you get one from young and really take time in the beginning to stroke it and allow it to gain your trust, then they will happily sit on your lap for hours while you take 5 in the evening. good luck..... or( just get youself a fella they do the same eccept they might object to the cage bit.x )

Hamsters do sleep all day, and are pretty easy to care for...if you want something more social and cuddly...something you can actually pick up and hold try a rat. They make great pets!
