There is no date at all, anywhere in the book. Other than on the Preface page after the author's comments. That date is "Hartford 1876" whis I feel sure was the original date written. The only other info. says " complete new edition" The Goldsmith Publishing Company...Chicago. There are no roman numerals, no dates or numbers of any kind.

According to the link below, this book was published in the early 1940s. Books from this period are usually recognizable by the paper used (which was not very good). Since the publisher was based in Chicago, you might be able to get more information from Chicago-area reference libraries. Another angle to try is Mark Twain societies -- there are probably collectors of his books that are familiar with the publication history. By the way, this is not a valuable edition.

I have both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. There is no publishing date anywhere in either book. They were given as a gift "Christmas 1945" so they were obviously published prior to that date!

Each book will have a copyright date listed. If a book changes publishers, like I'd imagine Tom Sawyer has done, then it should say something like "first edition by such and such company, date."

the year is probably written in roman numerals on the same page as the publishers name. Do you see that anywhere?

Google out-of-print books and pick a vender. I have found several to be quite helpful.
