Trial and error. But, once you find the perfect makeup for you, you will know instantly. Not only does it depend on your skin tone or color, but also the texture of your skin. If your skin is dry, then an oil based makeup may work better. Whereas, if you have naturally oily skin, then you will definitely want to avoid extra oil. In that case you would go for an oil-free makeup. Age also plays a factor. If you are young, then your skin will tend to be able to handle more types of makeup. Whereas, someone with aged skin will have to be careful to avoid makeups that will clump into fine lines and wrinkles (to avoid unsightly caked up makeup or looking older).

It depends on specifically what you're asking about.

In terms of colours, you should determine the tone of your skin - yellow undertones or red undertones, african american, indian etc. Based on that, you can determine what foundation colour to use. In terms of eye shadows, light skin tones should shy away from light peaches or yellows as they tend to wash the face out.

Take a look at a colour wheel on the internet and use complimentary colours for eyeshadows at first, and then you can start to experiment with siminlar colours to your eyes later. You'll find what works best for you pretty much through trial and error.

Brands really come dowon to personal preference - some drugstore brands are decent in certain products (mascara being one) but for foundations, if you can afford it, you should look to the department stores or make-up boutique stores. Prescriptives is excellent, so is Bare Escentuals, and MAC is a favourite among make-up artists.

Also, if you go into a store that employs make-up artists or has a comprehensive training program for their employees (such as MAC or Make-Up Forever, even Sephora sometimes) you can ask an employee to show you some basics in terms of colours.

trial and error. You can talk to people with similar skin type/coloring as you and ask what they use as a starting point. But, basically you have to try a few different brands/types before you find what you really like.

well...... it is a long process lol. the ebst way is to go into a a mall and ask an assistant the best make-up for your skin type and colour. the way i started was my mom brought me over to paris to sightsee and of course you cannot go to paris without shopping so we went into a perfumery and the assisstant picked out some great mascara and lipgloss for me with the right color and stuff and it all happened to be dior! so....... go and have a look. it does depend on the colour ranges your lookin for. some brands dont have the color you want so u go to a different brand. i have dior and clinique and benefit and mac. i love them all!

By experimenting with products made for your skin type and colour and seeing which one is best for you. You can go to the department stores and get advice and make up samples from any counter you are interested in.

I would suggest going to a Clinique counter, MAC, any brand you prefer and let them look at your skin and tell you what your type is. Until you know your actual skin type, you will not know which make up to purchase.

it depends on alot of things, i myself like to use mineral make-up. but that isn't right for everyone. if you really want to find out i would go to your nearest Sephora or Clinique because they give the best advice on what is right for your skin.

Through trial and error, you find what works for you and what does not. Something can be fabulous on your friend, but look terrible on you.
