I don't believe for a second this is about equity.
Give anyone with a political agenda or political axe to grind a shred of information and they push it until the origional considerations are gone and all you end up with is "a million fag march" on DC and no one knows why.
Heres the origional uproar...
Ever have a loved one get sick and go to the hospital?
If you're married and your spouse developes a serious illness...like aids for example...your spouse is scared...has to stay awhile...insurance will cover it...someone needs to do the paperwork to check said spouse in right...
well that someone is you...in a straight marriage.
You might even get to stay the night.
Share breakfast.
Whatever.
If your gay...and the state doesn't recognize gay marriage...
and your significant other goes to the hospital...
there's a really strong chance that you WILL NOT have visitation rights. Power of attorney. Insurance sign over. Nothing.
Most places you can't even sit in the vestibule to pray...
This is about those right and priveledges...not about politics...
The problem is - in our society - we listen to minority status and anyone that cries unfair, descrimination, hate crime...we really pay homage to that...
so this creates more prejudice...but it also gives the gay community some leverage.
personally...i don't think gays are deserving of anything more than any other "preferance"...it's as ludicrous as have people that date out of their culture having their own day, their own parade, and their own rodeo....
"Yeah, lets go dance naked in the MIX parade" Yeah MIX rights...we'll have a MIX rodeo...yippee don't descriminate against me...I'm a MIX...i belong to the rainbow coalition of mix people...MIX pride
anyways...when it comes down to it...some basic benefits and priveledges afforded to married folks should be allowed whether its a gay couple or hetero sexual couple....our society has evolved beyond the religious ONLY significance to marriage...
As long as the "Moral Majority" - which is neither - makes this a political issue...gays are going to be angry and escalate the issue...
did I type too much??
sorry
i don't have a political agenda...just wanted to answer a question before going to my straight bed and having sweet heterosexual dreams of hot women like Shakira

Mass. is also using legislature that was on the books from when inter-racial marriage was the issue to keep gay people from other states from getting married there. Furthermore, that marriage doesn't mean anything outside of Mass. Even still furthermore, it's not a full marriage. Much as marriage is supposed to be a "states issue", there are federal benefits that come with it. None of these benefits are extended to gay people. There's two tiers of the institution; the definition of second class citizenship. I want to know why straight people can't recognize that the legal marriage we want is completely seperate from their religious ceremony; no one is going to force your church to perform the ceremony, or recognize the union. The legal contract, however, should be accessible to any couple. Why all the uproar and anger there?

oh BLAH BLAH BLAH. You don't know what you're talking about. There are fifty states in the union, and many of them are so freaked out they passed laws banning gay marriage. Oh and then there's the defence of Marriage act, the inequal applications of the Article 4 of the United States Constitution, and inequal application of the fourteenth amendment.
I learned the hard way that sometimes, when you talk, it's not always worth listening to. The good news for you is that it's completely anonymous in here, so you don't even come away looking that bad.

MA is the only state with gay marriage, two or three other states have domestic partnerships.
The idea is equality of course.
Beyond that, some of us don't live in states with gay marriage, and other states don't recongize the marriages performed in MA -- so therefore, there really isn't equal rights.
If all states recognized the marriages, and if the wingnuts weren't trying to Consitutionally amend to bar them -- then I think the uproar would be over.
Do you think you could help us accomplish those goals?
Thanks.

I'm straight and can't speak for the feelings of homosexuals but I think it is more of an equality issue. Everyone wants to be considered equal in the eyes of the law. It's my understanding that a lot of states don't allow same sex marriages and can't receive the same benefits as married couples.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Marriages in MA, and a few other states, as well as Canada, are NOT recognized by other states. I propose the following: All wives have no rights if their husbands die...the husband's family gets to take all his property, cash, car, etc. ALL Wives have NO claim on Social Security payments in event of husband's death. ALL wives have NO rights at hospitals where husband is being cared for. ALL wives have NO say in the treatment of their husband in event of catastrophic illness. I could go on, but what is the point. You do not see past the end of your nose. But take heart, you are not alone. You and so many others continue to deny basic rights to all around you, thinking you are positively correct in whatever thinking you venture out long enough to do. I wish you good luck, for with your knowledge, you are going to need it.

Ummm... I don't know if you realize this, but a lot of gay people LIVE IN OTHER STATES! And even if you go there and get married, and go back to your original state your state will not honor your marriage or give you any rights. If straight people can get married in any state they want, gay people should be able to too. Btw, gay people can get married in Hawaii too.
