It helps if you don't watch as much TV and you pay attention to the rest of the world.
Also, remember there's more than one perspective on things. That's how I keep from turning into a sheep.. It's not that much work so.. You Americans should take after me.
If worst comes to worst, I'll shove a gun under my chin.

Unfortunately this is so true...yet amazingly among these same people are those who "think" they have unique and independent views. How does this happen? Well, because first, few people have truly learned how to think independently. It starts with our still pathetic elementary and high school education system in this country...run by the same morans who have not yet learned how to think independently and actually fear it for themselvess but especially for children.
Next, people then clinging to their fears, resort to behaviors that continue with this and look for "leaders" who think the same way "against our enemies." This is how Hollywood can capitalize on fear and make big bucks on the horror movies. Which brings me to another problem: So many people run their lives according to TV programs and/or Hollywood movies. This is because the have big holes in their souls (because they don't know how to think for themselve AND because they have not discussed their uniquely given talents and abilities) so they try to fill those holes whether they can...and most in our faces is TV and Movies.
So sadly most people are like sheep and cattle and those with half a brain and a little appreciation for their own talents can easily lead them around all the while letting them think they are making up their own "minds." (Minds meaning they think the type of things others have ordained they think.)

Really?
What issue is not contentious in America these days?
Even among the Republicans and Democrats.
I am not registered with either political party.
And , I suspect, neither are a lot of other Americans.
I have voted for Democratic Candidates, Republican candidates, and maybe even a third or fourth party candidate. IN THE SAME ELECTION.
I think it keeps things interesting.
I don't see a whole lot of lockstep..

I don't think so. If the demonstrations against American involvement in the Iraq war are an indication, if the polls which disfavour American involvement in any wars are an indication, most Americans do not believe what they are told and they do raise objections to many policies of the present Government.

I think so, nobody takes the time to actually find the hard facts themselves or watch CSPAN to witness things first hand, it has to be processed through the candy-coating machine known as cable news and then they can watch it. What really freaks me out is when I hear someone tell me I should respect and support somebody because they are my president or vice president, etc.. That sounds disturbingly like this one scary documentary I saw that was shot in the 40's, it was hard to understand because it was all in German! People that hate people like me for questioning my government call me unpatriotic; but in my opinion questioning your government is patriotic, it's what some crazy cats back in the 18th century did and it turned out to be a good thing.

What people believe is not necessarily a function of political parties, although they can certainly have some influence. Many elements are involved, for example age. Michael Moore produced a film and many people (primarily younger ones) have accepted it at face value as a documentary. This is more than interesting since Moore himself has stated that it is a propaganda vehicle which promotes his political views. That is, it is based opinion and not fact.
What people believe is far more complicated than just accepting what someone says.

I think your question is very good. Yes, Americans are led by the nose by both the politicians and also the media. We are hyped over incidents that may have been really minor or given the spin that reporters use freely, we are urged to think in one way...channel-thinking...or tunnel thinking...and sadly many people are too overwhelmed by the media to even bother with independent thought.

The more important question is:
Do we do anything about anything we are told? There has to be a correlation between being told something and believing it or not, and doing something about it. If I am told something, and believing it, am I doing anything about it? i would guess the result would be the same for things I don't believe. If I don't believe something, am I out there disproving it? Not really, sadly. I have other things to worry about.

I guess that you're asking if Americans are brainwashed by the media.
The answer is an emphatic YES!
Political discussion on the local level is dead due to polarization. Blogs like Daily Kos are radical to the extreme. There's no discourse there.

We are not living in a state of war. The citizens of the middle east are living in a state of war. Our soldiers are living in a state of war. We are living in a state of peace because our soldiers pick up their guns every day and fight for peace and freedom so we can sit home and watch it all on television. God Bless Our Troops and their leader the Commander and Chief, Pres. George W. Bush and this country that allows us the freedom to speak our beliefs with out fear of persecution.
