If you are asking how long ovulation takes each cycle, the answer is that is very quick--minutes.

If you are asking how long a woman if *fertile* around ovulation, the answer is that sperm can live for 3-5 days in the woman's body before ovulation *if* conditions are right (which they rarely are 5 days before ovulation!!); once she knows she has ovulated, it is probably too late to have sex and conceive. The egg only lives for a few hours, and it has probably been a few hours since ovulation. Even if not, it takes the sperm a few hours to be pulled up to the egg, so by the time they arrive, it's almost *always* too late to get pregnant. Knowing when you ovulate is almost never helpful in getting pregnant; knowing when you are *about* to ovulate is extremely helpful!!

And, while it may very well be true that some mythical average wonan ovulates on day 14 of a 28 day cycle, this "information" is worse than useless. In fact, it can *keep* you from getting pregnant. By its very definition, "average" is the same as "wrong" for most women. Think of it this way...if you were to assume that *every* woman you meet is 5'4" tall because that is average, you would usually be incorrect!!

Women ovulate about 2 weeks (usually 12-16 days) before their *next* period. So, if you have a 36 day cycle, you are most likely to ovulate between day 20 and 24. But without knowing where in that range you are ovulating, you *still* can't time sex for the best chance of getting pregnant.

Ovulation is the process in the menstrual cycle by which a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and discharges an ovum (also known as an oocyte, female gamete, or casually, an egg) that participates in reproduction. Ovulation also occurs in the estrous cycle of animals, which differs in many fundamental ways to the menstrual cycle.

In humans, the period when ovulation occurs is called the ovulatory phase, and it occupies the fourteenth day of an idealized twenty-eight day menstrual cycle. Because of the variable nature of the menstrual cycle in vivo, however, normal ovulation can occur as early as day 8 or as late as day 20 and beyond. A woman with a particularly short cycle will ovulate earlier while a woman with a long cycle will ovulate later. In humans, concealed ovulation means that the female shows few visible signs of being fertile, compared to most species.(disputed — see talk page) There are evolutionary analyses of how this could evolve in terms of evolutionary game theory.

Before ovulation, the ovarian follicle will undergo a series of transformations that are necessary for the ovum to survive afterwards. This process is called cumulus expansion. After this is done, a hole called the stigma will form in the follicle, and the ovum will leave the follicle through this hole. It will then enter the fallopian tubes and travel toward the uterus, implanting there 6-12 days later if fertilized, or degrading in the fallopian tubes within 24 hours if not fertilized.

The ovulatory phase is preceded by the follicular phase, where an immature follicle-encased ovum completes growing, and followed by the luteal phase, where the uterus is prepared to receive the fertilized ovum. The complete process of follicle growth leading up to ovulation is known as folliculogenesis.

Ovulation is the time when an egg or ova is released by a women's Ovary. The egg travels through Fallopian tubes and if a sperm from the male is also present in the tube, fertilization of the egg occurs and a a woman conceives. Once released, the egg can survive for up to 24 hours The hormone responsible for release of the egg is called 'Luteinising Hormone' and is produced by the brain. The sudden surge in the level of the hormone releases the egg and also causes a small increase in the Body Temperature.

HTere is a three day period (waiting time) that ovulation may occur in a woman on her regular cycle. It is usually the 14th day of her cycle, counting back to the first day of your last period. Your period, is actually the beginning of a new cycle...

The egg can last up to 72 hours unfertilized...

Normal egg gestational period is about 24...

sooo... figure... 14 days from the beginning of the first day of the last period... then wait about 3 days... and your pretty safe...

But, if calculation for birth control methods, it's always best to see a doctor who can set you straight on your own cycle.
