I disagree that she should visit the gynecologist after the start of her firt period. This is not only unnecessary, but could really be traumatizing and painful for a child of 11, 12, or 13. There is no point.
I have heard before that 16 is the age to go, but in my opinion, there is really no reason to go to the gyno unless you have a specific need. Here are the reasons that I would deem appropriate:
If a girl is 15 or older and has not yet started her period.
If a girl of any age is experiencing pain, itching, or a foul smelling discharge. (If the girl is 12 or younger, consult the pediatrician instead).
If the girl is having unusually heavy or painful periods, or a girl who has had her periods regularly in the past but is not getting periods anymore.
If the periods are so irregular that it is effecting her life, and she wishes to take medicine to control her cycle.
If the girl is contemplating sexual activity (at any age), and would like birth control
If pregnancy is suspected
If she has had sex for the first time
if she is experiencing any other type of reproductive health problem.
I personally think that otherwise there is really no reason to visit a gyno until you are 19 or 20, if you are still sexually inactive. People say it is necessary to get a pap smear, but I don't think that is necessary either unless you are sexually active and/or have a history of irregular paps, as cervical cancer is usually the result of HPV, a sexually transmitted infection, which often has no visible symptoms. So if you have been sexually active, then go, but otherwise, there is really no need.
Think about it, what is the point of taking a young girl for a traumatizing and uncomfortable pelvic exam just to have the doctor say that there is no reason to do it? Many doctors won't even take you as a patient at all.
Gynecologists offer a very important service, and regular exams are important if you are sexually active or over 35, but otherwise, don't bother!

Unless anything is bothering you, or you become sexually active, I think you could wait until you're about 21. The main thing the doctor does is adminster a Pap Smear. You should double check this but I believe a pap smear helps determine if you could have certain types of cancer, but generally, you have to be sexually active to be at risk for those types of cancer (sexually transmitted HPV virus can cause them).

I hope you're still checking these answers.
for medical reasons and to check on the proper development of things, DOCTORS even pediatricians strongly recommend that girls go to the gynecologist after their first period. there are some diseases that can be caught early if checked for.
these diseases can occur in girls that have had no sexual contact whatsoever, due to the hormonal changes that happen during puberty.

Unless she's having problems, why not wait till she's either 1-planning on becoming sexually active outside of marriage, or 2-soon to be married at which time she can decide on a birth control method, etc.

it's suggested that at the age 18 you should have your first gyno visit. But if you are having problematic periods, or major cramps from periods then you should be seen sooner to rule out any problems.
