my mother has been very ill and is sinking into depression and is getting very angry wiht everyone-i feel that the problem for the old is that in our youth oriented society they feel that no one really wants them-comments pls

Alot of times the younger gen will not spend time with elderly people because they feel like they can't relate or that they won't understand. This leads to elderly people spending alot of time by themselves. Get's pretty lonely when you don't have some one to talk to. This is a tough time in her life, try to be patient, show love, and over time the situation should get better. Do little things to show her that you care. Buy her flowers, fruit, find out what type of music she likes and try to get it, same with movies, etc.

To feel wanted is to feel valued.
To feel valued, people need to feel they can and are giving something of value.
If she can do very little on her own, do something like this:
Have her tell you about the family history and the people in it, their stories and adventures, what it was like in the bad old days and so on. In passing her knowledge to you, she again becomes the teacher, the mother, and perhaps the wise elder leading the way.
It would also help to ask for her advice on things, and actually take it. If it works out, make sure she knows.

It's almost universal. They feel like they're the only one experiencing old age. My great aunt occasionally gets ornery and says something along those lines. Maybe it's because she doesn't enjoy getting old, has nothing to do to occupy her, or she doesn't have a companion to share her problems with.

Older people need respect, compassion, and other older people to talk to.They do not need to feel like they are burdens to their caregivers. They don't need to feel like they have lost their independence.
