Windows media players is just that, a media player. It can play many types of movie files, most common being avi, mpg and (window's own) wmv. It can also play audio files including wav, mp3, mid and (window's own) wma. It does not play mov, as that format is owned by Apple.

If you start Windows Media Player, and select File menu then Open, you can pull down a drop down box at the bottom by the "media type" and see a listing of all the types WMP can use.

If you have a file of is not opening in WMP, and you want it to, right click on the file, and from the menu that appears, select "Open with...". A list of program will appear. You can browse to Media Player, and then check the box at the botttom to have it always use that program. Then files of the type will always open with Windows Media Player
