interesting.

I am sure the milking came from a man seeing a baby cow drinking its milk.. so the obvious thought was FOOD or DRINK.. or BABY FOOD.. or a LIFE SAVER.. and mostly inquisitively, I am sure (eg one said to another' check this out.. lets see if we pull it, something will come out)

Some guy's wife died at child birth (the old days) and then he had to substitute the milk somehow - the cow had milk for her calves, so he decided to feed his child with that milk. In India, since cows are holy, they use goat milk.

I'm sure they were freaked out but happy. They probably wondered if it was an OK thing to do in a spiritual/moral sense, since people from a long time ago were very very superstitious. Maybe they thought they were stealing life from the cow, but I'm sure they knew it was good to drink.

There's no way to know for sure what they were actually thinking. I'd bet my money on it being an accidental discovery. A cattle herder was probably tyring to relieve the discomfort being experienced by one of his cows, likely due to the death of a calf, and got some on him and thence into his mouth.

It's also possible that it was tried as a substitute for an infant whose mother was dry and unable to nurse. A parent trying to save their child will try almost anything.

The rest, as they say, is history!

Hey, just for your info. Prisoners of war were so thirsty at some encampments that they drank each others pee in some very old battles. So I am quite sure that the idea was to quench thirst without worrying about touching somebody elses woman in times of drought.
