First of all, not matter where you are "waitressing," it is rude to ask if someone wants change back. You simply say, "I'll be right back with your change." If the person wants you to keep it, they'll tell you. I used to eat at Sonic all the time, and I usually gave the person a dollar for a tip. They do have to bring your food out to your car, and they have to come back if you need ketchup or dessert or anything like that. It's also very cold or hot some days!

At least the server asked you about the change. Yesterday I gave the girl $5.61 for an order total of $4.61 thinking she could give me an even dollar back. She started to walked off without even asking if I wanted my change! That was definitely rude. I called her back and asked for my dollar back.
Answer: You shouldn't feel any obligation to tip at Sonic, unless the weather is bad or they give you above-and-beyond service.
Let Sonic management know of your disaproval if this "attitude of entitlement" to a tip happens again. If it still occurs, take your business elsewhere. :)

I do tip them, but not like I would at a regular restaurant. I give about a dollar on every $10 spent to the Sonic server. I know they make a few bucks more than a server does at at nice sit down place.

I never tip at Sonic, I didn't think that you were suppose to tip there, it is a fast food restaurant. I don't tip at McDonald's even if they tell me to have a seat and they bring out to the table to me.

i had a friend who used to work at sonic and she would say that you are suposed to tip them. frankly i have never done so and don't see why you should. Me and a friend went there like last month and to get back a solid dollar she gave her the amount of change it was, the car hop said oh thank you and kept it. we figured it was only a dollar so we didn't say anything. so watch your change, if you are not intending to leave a tip!

I think people used to believe you should tip at Sonic, but as more and more people do not, I don't think the servers expect it. Most of them don't even wait around to see if you will, they're off to the next order. My thought is, it's not my fault that they don't let us come inside. Why should I have to pay extra?

You are welcome to tip the sonic servers, but it is not as inportant as tipping servers at most other restaurants. At most restaurants, servers are only paid a portion of minimum wage by the business, and are expected to earn the rest in tips. Servers at Sonic, however, are paid a full wage, so tipping is not obligatory.

Yep, I tip. They deliver your food to you, right? Just like a regular restaurant. Just don't tip as much.
