Assuming you are asking about this in relation to an automobile, the answer is Anti-lock Brake System. This system has sensors that won't allow you to just slam on the brakes and go into a skid.

Anti-lock Braking Systems
Magnetic sensors in the wheel detect when the wheel is locked and releases the break momentarily until traction is regained (as detected by a voltage indicating wheel rotation from the magentic pickup -- induced EMF as in a generator at a power plant). This cycle may happen several times per second or per braking event. This keeps the car from sliding on wet or slippery surfaces such as ice or oil or bald tires. :-)
I have once had to replace the magnetic sensor. It is not too tough to do, at least, not on my Ford Explorer at the time.
