Yes. Write your idea down in explicit detail. Include drawings, photos of prototypes, material properties, proceedures, whatever you can to detail the idea. After you assemble all this, mail it to YOURSELF and if you have one, your lawyer, via REGISTERED mail . DO NOT open the registered mail envelope after you recieve it, instructing the lawyer similarly. Put it in a safety deposit box or safe. This is now your proof, dated by the federal government with a government seal, that YOU had the idea first.

You can get funding for patents though the government on a state or federal level. Check with your state.gov web site to find sources. If you have no luck there, contact your congress man or woman.
Make certain that you have a great lawyer when you have the patent done. My great grandfather patent a product and lost the patent because one screw was changed on the machine he worked years to invent. He ended up losing a multimilllion dollar product (now worth billions), because of a loophole in the lawyers wording. Discuss your product with NO-ONE!! I do agree with "richlandglory's" advice, although, I'd keep the lawyer out of it. That's just a recipe for disaster.
I wish you well in finding the funds you need to move on in your endeavor!!

You have to get the patent first. This mail yourself the idea nonsense doesn't have any legal legs. Beg or borrow the money, but get the patent. You might also copyright the design. You need a working model for the patent application to be accepted, so get to it.

Yes. Stay hush hush until you do get a patent or patent pending status. There are plenty of stories of stolen ideas running around. I wouldn't like to hear your story of how you lost out on $$ becouse you told someone that you "trusted."

I have heard of a "poor man's patent" which is to write down your ideas, or jot down pictures, with a plan of action, date it, have a trusted non-relative sign it with you, seal it, put in the the mail to yourself or someone trusted and don't open it. Keep it sealed until you have the funds or someone comes up with your idea and then try to go after them by using your "proof" of idea.
