I think they call him the Director. He is ultimately responsible for the direction taken by the movie. He doesn't micromanage everything in the making of a movie, but he's one with a lot of responsibility for how it comes out. Many, many people work on a big movie; this is why the credit list is so long. That, and the fact that people who work on movies are members of a union and union rules state that everybody gets a credit. Everybody wants their work to be noticed, correct?

The Director can have an idea as to what the story is he wants to tell or he can lose his train of thought and the movie will ramble to an inconclusive end. The success or failure of a movie depends on what the Director "sees" when he reads the script. If he has a clear-cut idea, the movie will most likely be a success. If he can't solidify his thoughts and ideas as to what the author intended in the original story (usually a book, but not always), the movie will be all over the highway and probably end up as a bomb. Think "Star Wars" versus Al Gore's idiotic, environmentalist-wacko offering.

A producer is in charge of everything. They control the money and the budgets. There are separate jobs, for each facet of the productions, there are props designers, runner, and installers. The camera man, the dolly, and the cinematographer. Then there is the director who is in charge of the artistic integrity and how the story is told.

Production Manager oversees the shoot. For the props, there is a Property Manager who buys and acquires all the props, and a Prop Assistant to take care of placement and maintenance of all the props within the set when the film is shot.
