Set scores are recorded as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, etc. Earlier matches didnt' have tie breaks and set scores sometimes went high at 14-12. The game scoring starts at 15 to distingish it from the set score. It was to keep the set score and the game score from sounding the same. Calling the score, 15-40, 2-3, makes it clear the game score is 15-40 while the set score is 2-3.
15, 30, 40 not 45 because 45 sounds too much like 40 to 5.

Since tennis was supposed to be only for the high class people, the (british) creators came up with this machiavelian plan of making the score keeping impossible to understand for the lower class people... You need to understand and forgive... after all, they are brits.

Basically, it's because of a clock. You have fifteen, thirty, forty-five (shortened to forty) and then the win.

i think it may be so you dont get your score mixed up with the number of games you play.
