How do you determine how far away a lighting bolt is from you?
(I think its somthing like the differance between lightning and thunder in secounds divided by 3 is # of km lighting is away)

* Count the number of seconds between a flash of lightning and the next clap of thunder.
* Divide this number by 5 to determine the distance to the lightning in miles.
* Remember – if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

When lightning strikes, the flash and the thunder happen at the same time. However, light travels much much faster than sound, so you see the flash first. The farther away you are, the bigger the wait for the sound. If the lightning strikes a mile away, the delay is 5 seconds.

It doest matter....if you can see flashes of lightening and can hear thunder the storm is close enough for you to be struck...seek shelter.
