This American still holds the constitution near and dear. I can't say the same for the American government.

I'm not sure exactly where you might be coming from, but I believe I agree with you that the U.S. is not the same country that it was founded as. My reasons are somewhat unpopular, however. Through extensive research on the topic, I find that the U.S. was founded as a democratic republic between free, independent, and sovereign states. However, Mr. Lincoln, and the Federalistic Whigs changed all that for us. He highjacked the system. The evidence is overwhelming, but I will share some examples. The Maryland legislature was considering voting for seccession, but Lincoln had the pro-seccessionist legislators imprisoned and he installed his own boys and then allowed the vote. But not before he turned cannons and other heavy artillary on the state capitol. You never heard of that, though, have you? The history we are fed by the public school system has been systematically rewritten. Furthermore, many newspaper editors who criticized Lincoln were arrested in the middle of the night and imprisoned in Ft. Lafayette. Many were even killed. Some estimates of the executions of northern critics of the president reach 40,000! He gave direct orders of mass murder in the south. He made medicine a contraband in the south so that civilians would die. He ordered his generals to shell several prominent southern cities. The list goes on and on, but this answer it getting lengthy. After Lincoln's death, the almost solidly republican northern Congress forced the phony 14th amendment into existence. Research that one in particular. It was never ratified. It was enacted! In other words, it never passed. They just made it so. The executive branch was never meant to be as huge as Lincoln made it and the other two were never meant to be as huge as they became after the phony 14th. Now we find our civil liberties trampled on without any regard for a constitution that was gutted and highjacked in the 1860's. Imminent domain was first introduced by Lincoln. Where do you find that in the constitution? What about Waco and Ruby Ridge? What about Elian Gonzales? We have no rights anymore, but what the massive federal government allows us to keep. We find our country has become the police of the entire globe. Where do we get the right to get involved with the rest of the world? Ever heard of the Monroe Doctrine, or Washington's Farewell Address? What about the Federal Reserve? The National Bank? That was a scheme hatched by Alexander Hamilton and thwarted by Jefferson and later Andrew Jackson and other people who believed in limited government. In closing, we have a monster on our hands. We no longer control our government; our government controls us. We are no more the United States of America, but the Nationalized Empire of America.

Unfortunately since the constitution is no longer taught in schools, and the majority of the people here have known nothing but the luxurious life in America, people don't appreciate the constitution. This isn't anything new, ever since people discovered that some of the founding fathers owned slaves, then everything they did became evil and worthless. And it just eroded from there, people aren't going to care until it's too late.

it is sad to say but in the wrong hands it is like the koran a set of rules interpited by idiots still gets us no-where.
i beleive in a srict interpitation of the costitution and many laws we have today violate the original text of the constitution.
PLEASE forgive the morons for there inept interpitation of the constitution which would have made america free to make choices and instead doomed us all to suffer .SAN-Fransisco and california are trying to lead us out of what has become enslavement of freedom through radical law-makers bent on deneying all people equal rights under the constitution .if you want a state that bans gay marriage you do not pass a constitutional amendment that violates the intent of the bill of rights it is a living breathing piece of art and frame work outlinning our individual freedoms and to often we lose rights garunteed by the constitution and after all to bush it is just a piece of paper that alone should of had him removed from office.

The constitution needs to be studied and understood, both by politicians and voters, in order for what we hold dear to survive! Right now I am very concerned about the system of 3 branches of government keeping the division of power going. Our forefathers knew, through their own sad experience of living under a tyranny, that this division of power is a necessity.

I still hold it dear. Can't speak for others. The principles of the constitution still apply today and always. The fathers of this country knew what they were doing and that's why this country has thrived.

The pick pieces out they like. Dems like freedom of the press and free speech and don't care about the rest.
Repubs are a little but but leave some out.
The people probably don't even know what it says.

most "normal people" still do... what happens is there are a lot of nut cases out there whom are always looking for ways to change/interpret the constitution just to suit their way of thinking.
Just take a look at all those "liberal" professors in colleges and universities fomenting hatred towards our own country and our way of life.

I think the average american doesn't really know what the constitution is, other than an old piece of paper. Americans are so dumb. (This is not an "unAmerican" statement, just true.)
