To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent
NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* Patent It Yourself (11th Edition) by David Pressman
* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo
* The Inventor's Notebook: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Fred E. Grissom
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

You can't. Patent lawyers don't work for free. You can try putting a patent application together on your own, though. Go to www.uspto.gov and see what a patent looks like. You can also search for patents in your area to see if your cool ideas have occurred to someone else before...

Inventions
Inventions
I find my self in the same situation.
How do you sell an Idea to someone who has the capital to develop it further without giving it away?
I would like to see a group or foundation for inverters to find people with capital or marketing experience. This would have to have some legally binding membership to protect ownership of inventions not yet patented.
What is the nature of your invention? I have many thoughts revolving around alternative fuel and zero emission.
Not necessarily an answer, but know you are not alone.
PS can you activate you email, would like further dialog on this topic.

Invent something. Patents aren't for your silly ideas. You have to turn them into some kind of useful product. If you want to get paid to think, become and academic researcher.

You don't need money for patents. It is free to patent your inventions. I am not sure if you can patent ideas though.

Your ideas can be copyrighted, intellectual property, until you can develop an actual product which you can then patent.

Look into government Grants. There are plenty of great books on them at your local library.
