Turtles are not easy pets to take care of. They require extensive knowledge, money, time, and TONS of space!! They are horrible choices for children. They should NEVER be removed from the wild. If you don't know what to feed it, how to care for it, why it's sick, where to get one, why it died, etc.. then don't get or keep a turtle. If you can't afford outrageous vet bills, then either don't be an idiot and care properly for them, or don't keep them as pets. Surrender them to a local rescue and stay away from them! Regarding eggs, this is a lengthy response. You would be better off asking a skilled chelonian veterinarian, joining a Yahoo! group or another knowledgable organization. Does this cover it all?

You are right. They also are a long commitment as they can live to a very old age. They can live as long as 40 years if taken care of properly. I have 3 red eared sliders as pets and it was an expensive start up and they grow bigger and require a bigger tank to grow and thrive in and that is also costly. Their diets are complicated if you want them to have a balanced diet. Children should never have the full responsibility of taking care of them. I had them when I was 7, but my parents took care of them fully, as I could never at that age.

To everyone who thinks their s*** don't stink!!!! Pretty much every person has owned a turtle at one time or another. I know I had them when I was younger. These people asking questions about their turtles at least have the turtles best interest in mind. Not everyone is a born expert like you. Instead of down grading everyone why don't you give them advice so these animals can have the best care needed. You have no right telling people what they can and can't do. If you are so concerned about animals then why are you just focused on turtles? How about any animal that is sold in a pet store? They are all (or at one time) wild animals. Why are you not down grading the pet store for selling these animals to people who may not know how to care for them or giving the people buying these animals enough info. on them?
Get off your high horse!!!!!!

Great, Sean. While you are basically right, you've just posted a statement that now will fall to the bottom of the stack and not help anyone who should see it.

I understand your frustration, but surely there is a smarter outlet for you?

i agree...although i used to own turtles..but only because i felt bad for them..they were at a flea market in tiny little cases with hardly enough water...so i bought them all and put them in my aquarium...after two years though...they all got diseases..so i went to the vet and they told me to put this cream on their backs and to put this medicine in their mouths. About a week later though..they died...

so dont take them unless the habitat that you find them in is in poor condition and you can give them a better one
