Some people are extremely gullible. Others have no idea of how to do research or investigate a rumor or blatant lie.

I feel that the answer to this question is, there is a whole lot of blame that can be placed, none of it on themselves, for being given the wrong information. It's just not your fault. I think that it is a total lack of responsibility especially if the issue that should be investigated has anything to do with "seeing to it" that they are doing their part for the betterment of the community, school, family, team, whatever. There is no real drive to investigate anyway, if you accidentally turned up new information or found that the information that was thought correct turned out to be wrong, well then, that would mean you would have to do something. That small thing might just be simply bringing someones attention to the matter, but people do not want to be bothered for any reason what-so-ever. (I know this isn't the case with everyone, but I can sure tell there has been a change in the way people are in the last 15 years especially.

The answer is part of your question: Because it's easier to accept a rumor, a myth, or an urban legend as a fact without having to challenge such assertions. Most people find it easier to become followers rather than leaders. Doing research on given topic takes time, energy, intelligence, patience and persistence. The average person is not willing to invest any of the above to discredit someone else's theory because he, or she does not have a monetary incentive to do so. There are, however, many individuals and organizations out there working to erradicate all these myths and beliefs that still corrupt our society and keep people in the mental darkeness of centuries past. Visit the Skeptic society at WWW.Skeptic.com and by the way, that was a great question. Congratulations!!

These days people are conditioned by the government to be really busy, overwhelmed and apathetic. This makes them easier to control. Now people simply react. They don't really do anything about the violence they see on TV, they just go passive and watch their "reality TV" which gives them an easy opportunity to put someone else down. It's a little that like a gladiators and the Lions in ancient Rome-thumbs-up or thumbs down. That's as sophisticated as most people get these days. You like the movie or you don't. You vote the person off the island, it's all the same thing. People are just too lazy to investigate it the sales surrounding things anymore. They're not rewarded for it either.

Many just don't want to hear anything that interferes with their preferences or beliefs. Some may be lazy, too, but I think most ignorant or biased people will always turn deaf ears to facts .
One thing about them though, some of them will look up anything to bolster their own view point and could care less about the truth. They just want to be right.

Because by not investigating they can live in a world where the truth is whatever they want it to be. If they investigated, they would find out the truth.

Same reason they would rather listen to gossip instead of meeting someone new and getting their information first hand. They are not really interested.
They want to know to be in the know but are to lazy to think and ask for themselves.

Allah is He Who created you in (a state of) weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then after strength gave (you) weakness and grey hair. He creates what He wills. And it is He Who is the AllKnowing, the AllPowerful (i.e. Able to do all things).
do you believe in this?

Investigating takes energy, curiosity, intelligence.... I would say they believe what they hear so they don't have to expend energy, tap into their curiosity and use their intelligence (if they have any).
