The fact is that there *is* not best formula. No formula is "closest to mother's milk" (and it is in contravention of international agreements to even make that claim--although most manufacturers do!!). One formula may try (and fail) to make the carbohydrates similar to that in human milk. Another will try (and fail) to make the protein close to normal. And a third will try (and fail) to copy the fats.
*None* will even try to get the same mineral balance as human milk because a baby would die on such a formula! Formula *must* have a much higher iron content than human milk because the iron is so poorly absorbed that a baby would be anemic if they didn't do this. And, obviously, no formula can even *try* to include nutrients that have yet to be discovered.
Lastly, every major manufacturer of formula has had recalls when the products were discovered *not* to have been made up to the required standards. There is a formula recall on average about once a year in the US.
So use whatever formula your doctor recommends (most likely the one that gave him the nicest gifts) or whatever your friends recommend (probably the same), or just try one and see if your baby can tolerate it pretty well...and if not, then switch.

Formula is still an experiment. It is EXPENSIVE, contains icky things like corn syrup, and has only been around for 50 or so years.
Breastfeeding is FREE, Natural and have ensured the survival of babies for thousands of years.

The best "formula" for any baby is manufacturer provided: the mommy's breastmilk.
That's the best.
The ok substitutions should always include DHA and AHA essential oils to help the baby's brain develop properly.
(By manufacturer, I mean both God the Creator and the Natural Mommy )

My daughter didn't do too well with Similac. The only one she ate(without spitting up everywhere) was Carnation Good Start.

I would try breastfeeding first and foremost, then if necessary whatever formula your baby digest well. Money shouldn't matter when it comes to your infant's food.
