they told me when I was with cingular that it could only be used with cingular service because it had a chip in it that made it so

go into your phone and find network settings and choose 'new network'
note: the only major cell providors thatstill use sim cards are cingular and t-mobile

Depends on what company you are trying to use it with, and the make and model of the phone.
