I live in Minnesota and I'm looking for a job this summer, however few people hire 14 year olds.

I'm hoping for a job somewhere other then a fast food place (McDonalds, Burger King) however, I realize that most jobs that don't involve flipping burgers aren't availible for people 14 years of age.

So far I've applied at the Carmike Theatre (just put in the application today)

Does anyone else have any other suggestions please?

Thanks!

It will be hard for you to find a job in the marketplace. But that doesn't mean you can't start your own.

Make up flyers for

"Teen Seeking Odd Jobs and Yard Care"

On there, mention that you'll walk dogs, trim hedges, mow lawns, rake leaves, pull weeds, and run errands. Hand them out to your neighbors (especially older women), friends of your parents and grandparents, etc.

My son started this kind of business 3 years ago when he was 13 and bored at Grandma's house when down there for the summer. So he got her to recommend him to all of the friends in her Mahjong and Bridge clubs. They were eager to have him. He started by charging $5/hr and understood that meant that he had to work the whole time he was there (no "Pepsi breaks"). Because he worked hard, they kept calling for him. Now he's 16 and making enough to buy his own car, pay the gas and insurance, and buy all of his own clothes. It's the kind of freedom that he enjoys because no one's standing over him timing him or criticizing him. It's all work he's been doing at home since he was very young. But most of all, they now pay him $50 for 4 hours and he's working 6-7 days/week.

Laws vary from state to state that limit how many hours an employer may utilize people your age. I don't know MN, but that is probably why you may find it difficult. But there are other things you can do.

Ask the adults in your life to help you find tasks you can do that you could be paid for. You can get a paper route. My dad was a doctor and when I was your age, he hired my younger sister and I to clean his office every weekend.
I have a friend whose 15 year old daughter comes to our office a couple of times a week after school to help us with our filing.

Good luck. I think it's great that you're so ambitious and responsible.

Most states require that you are at least 16 before you are able to get a job. You might do better looking for jobs such as baby sitting, pet sitting, dog walking, washing cars, light house cleaning...

Good luck and I hope you make a lot of money this summer!

I believe most movie theatres won't hire you if you are under 16. If there are small businesses you could help out with the small stuff. Or maintain a salon... like sweeping the floors, cleaning mirrors, etc. It's really hard for a 14 year old to score a job. Just wait a few years because even McDonalds won't even hire anyone under 16.

How about becoming a newspaper delivery boy? Paperboys are hard to find in the summer for some newspapers.
