Do you think there was a fundamental "values swap" between the Democratic and Republican parties in the past? Considering that it was the Republicans who freed the slaves and struggled to give blacks civil rights in the reconstruction-era South, while the Democrats started the Confederacy, and instituted and upheld Jim Crow legislation and Segregation for nearly a century, how did people come to associate the Republicans with the needs of the wealthy, whites, and big business, and the Democrats with the needs of the downtrodden and disenfranchised?

After the Civil War, the south refused to have much to do with the party of Lincoln. That is why the Democratic Party was so powerful: it controlled the politics in the southern and midwest states. As the population shifted to the south, Republicans went with them. And after Lyndon Johnson, a Texan, forced through civil rights reform, the south pretty much decided the Democratic Party was not for them. The more "liberal" northern states are still losing population to the south and west, and the Democrats are reaping the harvest they deserve for taking black and Hispanics for granted and agreeing to go along with big business and big money, and to hell with the middle class. For all their talk, do you really think Kerry or Kennedy would give 36 billion dollars to charity?

The Republican party did start out with the now Democratic "values"in a bid to undermine the Dems high handed and money powered hold on politics.

I don't know why, but they each seems to cross to the other side of the fence.

I've thought of this before myself. I don't think they have switched values. In my opinion I feel the Republican party has always had more integrity. I think they try to do what is best at any given time where Democrats appear to me as doing what they think people want them to do at any given time. This is a very subjective opinion though and I realize it may not be completely fair.
