If you click on the battery icon on the upper right side of the menubar, you can select "better performance" or "better battery life".
When I'm on an airplane that lacks in-seat power, I set my MBP to maximize battery life. I also make sure that airport and bluetooth are off. By setting the laptop to the power-saving mode, turning off wireless, and reducing screen brightness, I can hit around 4 hours of life per battery.

Depends on what you're doing. I have a 15" with the 2.16 dual-core, and the battery typicallly lasts about 3 hours or so with iTunes and Word open. However, if you're running processor intense applications, battery time will be shorter. You can change the settings to minimize power consumption, too.

I agree with ratt. The more apps open the less time the battery.
