I recently spent 4 months in peru and had the time of my life, the people are warm and friendly and the sights are amazing, Nazca, Matchu pitchu, titticaca, colca canyon and much much more. Lima is ok but cusco and Arequipa are stunning I took the time to learn some spanish and the locals really appreciate it I also did 6 wks vollantary work and that was really cool. I'd agree with everything people have said here, especially about learning some spanish to really enjoy your holiday in Peru - you'll get so much more out of it if you learn even a little.
The only thing that hasn't been mentioned here is some of the less 'touristy' places. Yes, Machu Picchu is a must, the Nazca Lines are great, Cusco is amazing and Arequipa is beautiful... however: some of the places in the north of Peru, such as Chachapoyas, Trujillo, and the northern jungle around Iquitos are absolutely fascinating and don't have nearly as many tourists. Chan Chan (near Trujillo) and the pre-Inca fortress of Kuelap (near Chachapoyas) are the equal of anything in the south and you can have them practically to yourself!

Listen, I'm Peruvian and i should say my country is terribly beautiful unless you don't know how to take care of yourself, so be pretty careful with everything when you come over. Now you need definitely to visit Macchu Picchu, Cuzco, Pachacamac, Nazca, Mancora, Pozuzo, etc. I really recommend you to learn some Spanish as it'll be really useful since not many people here speak English properly, although you will be surprised of how many people know at least a few words.
Oh and watch out for what you put in your mouth! Our cousine is wonderful but be careful were you eat!

Yes. I have been there twice in the past several years. If you stay in Cuzco in order to visit Machu Picchu ,take it very easy the first day you are there ,especially if you are coming from Lima. The altitude can give you a nasty headache. You may want to drink the mate de coca tea that is offered in all the hotels. I recommend Peru highly. Lots of adventure,nice people, and beautiful scenery are waiting for you!

Peru is enjoyable, but only if you're open to discovering and actually enjoying the Peruvian culture(I am Owner of a Travel Agency; I have been to South America several times and enjoyed my visits). The food is different to be sure, and depending on where in Peru that you plan to go, you may encounter some slums in your travels while you're there.
But as a whole, it is a nice place to visit. If you need more info, I am available to you.

be carefull with the cab services in the Lima airport. It wolud be safer if you contact a travel agency in your country that will send people to pick you as you arrive.
The best season to go to the andes and the jungle is between may-june to september.
Just need to stay 2 or 3 days in Lima, then go to Arequipa, Puno, Cuzco, Machu Picchu or cities in the jungle, like Iquitos, Chachapoyas (Kuelap pre-inca ruins), Madre de Dios (national reserve park in the jungle).

Peru is like the mushroom you wont eat today and throw to the garbage, the dog wont pet today so have it killed, the alpaca whose wool wont use tonight yet cut his ears on rage.
Peruvians like truth and say it all, will like none and love everything, that is unheard of yet easy to understand: spell. Our country is a magical planet of sorrow and magic, you will find it finds needs and allots them in scheeme with mother earth and insulting mountains.
