I bought a plant from a nursery and they put air in the bag before it was sold to me.

They do this to keep the bag from doing physical damage to the plant, by collapsing inward on the delicate petals. Also, a cushion of air is a good insulator from extreme temperatures if you leave the bag in the hot sun.
