Seems to run fine, but it sounds like the compressor might be bad. It blows air ok, but when it tries to kick out the cold air, it stops so it's essentially a big fan. You don't hear that Hum that you'd normally get. Is it even worth the cost of repair?

Not worth the repair considering that you can get a new one for a couple hundred bucks or less. Your new one will run more efficiently too.

Depends on what is wrong with it.

Bear this in mind though. Most places that you take it to will charge you to look at it, which could range from 50-80. They will charge you at least an hour of labor, around here, heating and air contractors charge around 75/hr. I am not certain to the cost of the compressor, but I can tell you the the refrigerant will cost about $40, and the oil will cost the about the same. I can also tell you that the disposal costs charged by the shop will be added in.

In otherwords, you are probably better off buying a new one. Watch the new Fedders units, the motors aren't sealed and dirt can get in the bearings and cause them to fail.... we have been having that problem with the new ones throughout the mill.
