Your question seems to make the assumption that the economy is one large inter-connected system. It's not. It's a disconnected set of businesses, consumers, government agencies and other organizations that are all interacting, each to their own benefit.

The beauty of the free market economy is that it is self-healing. If there is a change to one part of it, those parties involved will suffer, then re-form their efforts in another area that is more conducive to prosperity. Steel companies fade away, for example, and software companies prosper. If people were to stop buying Starbucks coffee tomorrow, say, another trend would rise and take its place.

If anything kills the economy, it will be an overpowering federal government that taxes, regulates and controls businesses out of existence. Businesses need incentives to grow and prosper, or else why try?

The gap between the rich and the poor keeps getting larger, the middle class is disintegrating...I would say this economy is on a downward spiral with president Bush at the helm.

The economy will be fine. Can you manage through it is the question. I bet a ton of people are going to lose their house and some will become homeless. Sucks.
