There isn't one - people in England just "leave school" (that's the official term) and then go to college (Oxford, etc) and turn out just fine. There isn't a ceremony, and the only diploma you'll get over there is from a university. Here, it's a sort of tradition - probably some high school wanted to make a big deal, and give their graduating high school students "diplomas," which really didn't mean anything. Then, more schools started doing it, and now it's the norm and you need one to get anywhere in life.

The whole thing - the ceremony, walking across the stage, shaking hands, and getting that shiny little piece of paper is pointless. FYI - I graduated from high school a month ago.

Most community colleges require either dual enrollment (enrolled in high school at the same time) or a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).

That said, my husband never did get his diploma (20+ years ago), got into the local community college, transferred to university and now has 2 Bachelor's and a Master's!

Diplomas imply to other people that the holder of it has learned enough to be issued one. So they tend to hire the diplomate over others, and tend to think that they will do better.

Other than that, there is no point in getting a diploma of any kind - just the economic one. I don't know that a person can get out of a community college without getting, while there, a ged.

Your high school diploma is more than just a piece of paper-it shows that you follow through and have received the education available in your area. There are many things we learn in school-how to manage priorities, social etiquette, how to work under deadlines, turn in projects on time, be here or there on time, work with a schedule, manage our time, the list goes on and on. People 'say' that they look at a diploma and a GED the same, but they really don't. Most people don't get their diploma because of various reasons. Some it's a matter of transportation. Others may get pregnant and have to drop out. Others may not have the best homelife or have to go to work to help support their families. Some have problems with drug or alcohol abuse and it affects their ability to function with the above tasks. If you have the ability to do it, it is best for you to obtain your diploma.

Maybe the fact that YOU ACTUALLY FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL. Sure you can go out and get your GED. But what's going to look better when you go for a real job?
"Diploma? No, I didn't bother with that. I took the short cut and got my General Equivalency instead. No... I'll work hard for you though. Yeah, you can count on me. I always finish what I start. So, when do I get my first break?"
Yeah that'll go over good. Don't be a fool, stay in school. You'll be glad you did. Unless you want to work carnival rides for the rest of your life.

If you don't get your diploma, at least get your GED.
Many jobs require that you have at least a GED.

It's true that many very smart people do not finish high school. And many stupid people do. But another thing that either of these certificates prove is that you can complete a project - which is always a good thing to be able to prove to a possible employer.

I've had to turn down a lot of smart people at my office because they didn't have that piece of paper!
