If you mean by "powerful" run faster, the only thing you can do is to add memory. You should look at the task manager. If you see PF (page file) activity, (ie. going up when you load and use software), you don't have enough memory.

The way Windows is designed, it will always use page file. But the number should stay about the same, not peak up when you load new applications.

You should also check if you have unnecessary softwares running. When you purchase a new laptop, they typically come with dozens of pre-loaded junk that you'd never use, and some of them are set to run when you boot. Look at the right bottom corner of your screen. Most likely, what you see there is loaded. Start closing them and see if you see a difference. If you do, you should investigate if you can uninstall them, or see if you can make it not come up automatically.

Other than that, only way you can speed it up is to buy new laptop.

well you can free space on your hard drive or add more ram. also clearing yourt internet cache will help so will running defrag regularly.

however to get serious performance enhancements your unlikely to be able to increase performance much.

you can try running tweakxp from www.totalidea.com af free demo is available.
if you want a real power and performance boost you may have to contact your pc maker to see if they can either upgrade the CPU for yu or advise you if the CPU can be upgraded.
you may also like to try a faster (higher RPM) hard drive (see www.dabs.com in the UK.
another tip is to increase the minimum space available as system cache to about 4or 5GB this will help when dealing with media files on your system. also your internet cache needs to be increased to the maximum availble to you.

good luck
anyone reading this these tips apply to just about any pc running windows XP and above.
