It's a stream-of-consciousness book about the adventures of Polyphilo (lover of many things) wandering through a dreamlike world searching for his lost love Polia (many things). Not important so much for its subject as it is for its beauty and rarity as a printed rather than handwritten book, and for its woodcuts which are thought to be an important influence on Renaissance architecture.

Keep reading. You learn more and more about Hypnerotomachia Poliphili as you get deeper into "The Rule of Four." It's a great book.

The rule of 4 is something to do with Hippocrates theory, isn't it? Bile, black bile, blood and something?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnerotomachia_Poliphili - Looks like a lengthy read on what you're looking for! Hope it's somewhat helpful.
