It depends on what you're looking for, your budget, and how you plan to get around. If you have the time, of course, you can stay in SF most of the time and spend a day or 2 touring the wine country in the Napa Valley. If you're into wine, you may want to focus your vacation there exclusively; otherwise, there's much more variety to center your vacation in and around SF. Much will depend on your taste: are you more of a city person, wanting to see Chinatown, ride the cable car, etc.? If so, SF can keep you busy for more than a week easily. On the other hand, will you enjoy the scenery north of the City more: drive across the Golden Gate Bridge to the redwoods in Muir Woods, then the top of Mt. Tamalpais for a 360 degree panorama, then drive through Napa - all in one day? It's a long day, but it can be done. You can also drive south to Carmel, Monterey and Big Sur and do that in one day. The good thing about a vacation focused on SF is that it's centrally located for the time you want to spend out of the city.

I've lived in or near SF for 20 years, and am happy to make more specific recommendations if it'd be helpful.

Good internet forums to consult are Fodors.com and Frommers.com

I am an Owner of a Travel Agency; however, because I do not live far from either locale, I get to go to both places often.

Having said that, they both have their strong points. Examples--

1- San Francisco. Plusses- The views(unequalled), the food(seafood, awesome soudough bread, Ghirardelli chocolate), shopping venues Minuses--can get crowded depending on time of year, traffic. Can be pricy.

2- Napa Valley. Plusses- Wine-lovers paradise. Beautiful scenery. Very nice places to eat there. Minusses- The weather in the Summer(although some people like it). The occasional snooty person. Can be pricy as well. After all, this is Napa.

But overall, choosing between the 2, I'd take a Napa Valley vacation.

You should do both!! You could stay in San Francisco, since there are so many things to do here, and then take a drive to Napa and spend either a day or weekend. Napa is a very nice place but there aren't a whole lot of things to do there. Its very relaxing and a great place to spend a day or two. Its also only about a 40-60 min. drive from Napa to SF, and you could cross the Golden Gate Bridge to get there, which would also be really nice. Have fun!

I strongly recommend San Francisco (you can order your Napa Valley wine at an Italian restaurant in North Beach while you're here).

Depending upon your length of stay, you can incorporate Napa Valley into your vacation. It's not that far from San Francisco, and if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can continue north on Highway 101 & get some spectacular views of the ancient redwoods in Humboldt County.

If something they are going to draw even extra followers. Santa Clara isn't that faraway from San Francisco perfect, and that is going to truly be easier to get to the stadium in Santa Clara, than the cluster***ok that's Candlestick Park on the instantaneous. restricted-access highway get proper of entry to, absolutely parking (particularly of a persons' backyard), and a present day stadium?! signal me up. I somewhat went to video games in Candlestick, yet i'm truly getting in Santa Clara. And for out of city human beings, San Francisco is an trouble-free 1/2 hourchronic up the line, so that is nonetheless fairly a draw.

SF hands down if you ask me. I've been to the wine company once and don't ever see the need to go back. SF has tons of different things to do and see.
