You are illegal, so you should not be getting anything at all!!

You should be jailed and deported, and never allowed to freturn, because you have no respect for out laws!

Your employer should also be fined!

Nope. You live in one of the most expensive cities in the country. A good salary would be enough for you to live on your own and not starve. Can you do that now?

Plus it sounds like you aren't getting paid on that overtime (hours over 40). I don't know what the DC laws are regarding overtime pay, but I think all 50 states say you should get time and a half for those extra 8 hours.

Find the labor website for DC and find out if you are entitled to overtime. If you are, there is likely an agency that will help you get all that back pay from your employer. You might even be entitled to extra money because he's been screwing you.

$7 hr for retail is high in some areas, but not in any of the big cities. Even here where I live and wages are typically much lower than DC, my teen daughter who works retail is making $8 hr (and its her first ever job). I'm guessing you're at least a couple of dollars below what you could be getting.

Check around..that is if your boss lets you have any time to look.

In DC, you can't really live on 20 dollars a hour. But it is better than being unemployed. There are not as many higher paying jobs out there any longer with most jobs going into the service industry of some type.

I would recommend trying to go to night school, online college , tech school or some way to increase your skills or education

are you happy with that amount? are you able to be self sufficient? if those questions are yes and you have no kids to send to college then I would say it is ok if you enjoy what you are doing. I do not think that most people would be content at that level of compensation though, or at least I would not. But all that is important is if you are satisfied. I have to add this as I did not see that you are not a citizen authorized to work in this country. You should not be working here until you are legal to do so, I you have any respect for our country which you obviously do or you would not be here, have respect for our laws and do what it takes to become legal.

no not a good salary at all but we all have to start somewhere, so in the mean time dont quit, just look for a better paying job and when you get an offer that you like you'll take it and then give your current employer 2 wks notice but always to t he right thing. good luck
