Okay...so I have a old Emachine...and the MB blew. So I bought a new MB as most similar to the old MB (microATX)..swapped it out...and now I am the stage of configuring BIOS...and booting up XP. Of course, I got a screen that told me to telephone Microsoft...to get the new installation code...and Microsoft sent me to EMachines...would only give me a universal product key...and no dice yet. Somewhere I read that Windows XP that came bundled with the Emachine would not reactivate unless I swapped out an exact MB to the one I had...but there is no exact one from Emachine. The question is, obviously...can I activate XP and if so, how? I do not have restore CD's or another copy of XP...any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I work as a computer repair person and I had a customer need a new emachine motherboard. I did not have to buy a new CD of XP. Just install windows using your cd key and then when activating Windows tell them you reinstalled because the motherboard blew out and you were forced to re-install. They will ask for the activation code, not the CD key, you give them the code on the screen and they give you a code to enter in then you will have activated windows. I do this frequently so I know it works, if you still have problems, I could help you but your computer would have to be connected to the internet and have Windows installed first.

Buy a new copy of XP. The OEM key provided by eMachines will only work with the original hardware configuration. That is the only way.

Isn't there a Product Ket sticker on your machine? You can probably use that. Windows will not accept it but you can call and they will give you a confirmation number you have to type in your computer. They will usually tell you that you are using an OEM license from a manufacturer and you have to give a reason why. The product key should always be stuck on the computer when you purchase it with Windows, I think that is required for all manufacturers to do.

wait for the code from microsoft (emachines). Sorry, that's the best answer.
Anyone sending you another code will cause problems with updates later. Trust me.
Keep bugging them daily.
