I recently applied for several jobs and am very surprised that there have been no responses. I am a qualified person and have always had great reviews at work. In most applications I have provided my SS# so I am concerned that there may be some negative info out there. Several years ago I had filed for workers comp and ultimately had to file civil action agianst my old employer, could this be hurting me? How can I get past this if it shows on my background?

For checking out whether there is any in background, get hold of some background checking agency and get your background check done.

For that one incident, be honest, mention it clearly in your resume that this has happened so your prospective employer will appreciate that and will not be taken back by surprise when they receive this information from someone else.

Sometimes employers also check credit backgrounds... you might want to get a credit check and see what can be cleaned up from that.
