I do it all of the time, actually these days I use power strips everywhere. I think they maybe a bit safer then the standard extension cord.

The answers telling you about the amps are correct.... but here is a fast simple test.... plug your fan into the extension cord.... and let it run for a few minutes.... if the extension cord is getting hot, you need a heavier extension cord. If the fan cord is hot... it needs to be replaced (with heavier cord... and if youre going to replace, just make it long enough that you don't need an extension cord, heheh).

Check the cords after 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and one hour.... if they haven't gotten hot during that period of time, youre all set.

So long as the fan's cord or the extension cord are in good shape and not damaged in any way, I see no problem with that. What type of portable fan are you talking about?

it is if you use the right wire guage on the extension cord, and its not too long. this is where people make mistakes and burn down their house. use a chord heavier than the one on the fan, plug it in and run it, but check it after a couple of hours and make sure both the cord on the fan and the extension are not getting warm..just grab hold of it for a minute to check...you will be able to tell. also never hurts to put it on a surge strip as well...

Yes it is safe as long as it is a good condition cord. But by OCEA's standards, you are only allowed to have it plugged in for no more than 24 hours.

you first need to look at the nameplate rating on the fan.It will give you the fla rating or full load amps.then you have to determine the size of wire used in your extention cord.12 gauge is good for 20 amps 14gauge for 15 amps. those are the most common sizes for house hold wiring.just don't use one that is to small as you could start a fire.

If the cord is now, go ahead. Just don't use an old cord.
