I don't know if "most" are... but I know many that are. Read "Touched by Fire" by Kay Redfield Jamison. I think you'd be surprised. I was. And to answer the question answered by another of your readers, the connection is the depth and breadth inside a person. People who are depressed and suicidal are often ill because they are able to feel things on a level others are not aware of. I think they just use a different part of their brain, one that somehow seems to be correlated with creativity. Being creative is an outlet for them to express something that otherwise others seem unable to grasp. Statistically, I can't help you. But I can tell you that those who endure great pain often must reach inside theirselves for great strength to survive it and finding a way to express that pain helps them release it. I think that's why it's so common. Creative expression is not a choice for them... it is a need.

Although everything is Relative and NOT FIXED:
because they understand and know many things that ordinary people doesn't, and usually they don't find anyone that understands them, they become depressed and even may commit suicide.
You must have experienced the feeling when you find out that no one understands you, to understand what i mean.

possibly there's a leaning towards depression, a lot of creative people are deep thinkers (not all) & when one thinks deeply about the human condition there's always the possibility of getting depressed...
