yes in windows VISTA you can and i think in XP, all you need is a ROUTER with either direct PC to PC cables or use one that is Wi-Fi enabled with a wi-fi adapter in each computer.

see www.dabs.com for routers and adapters last time i looked they had a router with built in modem and usb adapter for under £50 including delivery
you would need to set a series of share folders on the computers and if you want the folders secured so only authorised people could gain access you need to add each user that has access to your system in the add new user section.
you will also need to set the wifi to only accept devices you own by filtering the allowed devices by MAC address every device on a network has a seperate MAC address this is clearly printed on each device you connect. however for the mac address of your computer this will be only available by opening up yor pc case and looking on the LAN / ethernet port its not always marked as a MAC but a mac normally starts 0001 fgollowed by a series of numbers and letters but mixed random letters and numbers.

I did it with USB to USB cable that came with drivers. It can be used for file transfer or for networking. You can find more info about the cable here: http://www.networktechinc.com/usb-link.html
