1904 (the NL champion Giants refused to play the AL champion Red Sox and 1994 (players strike). The Red Sox were also the defending world series champions, having upset the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series, played in 1903.
There was also no world series in EVERY year prior to 1903.
So that would include 1902, 1901, 1900, 1899, 1898, 1897, 1896, 1895...well, you get the idea...

Since 1903, the only years the World Series did not take place were 1904 and 1994. During the World Wars, they still had the Fall Classic, but it was a lesser quality of ball player, as most men were off fighting the war.

Well, the first World Series was played in 1903, so the Series wasn't played in any year before 1903. Since 1903, there have been two: 1904 and 1994. Both were caused by labor disputes, one money and one...not.
