Really it depends on you and your doctor. There may be a reason you arent being checked like the chance of sending you into premature labor, or irritating your cervix. Calm down it will be okay. I have only had 1 ultrasound with my 3 children and that was when I was 22 weeks along. They usually dont start checking you weekly until you are at least 36-38 weeks along and thats only if you are having problems. other than that they try to let nature do the work.

If you are in the late stages , which you probably are since you have spoken of dialation. The DR. may only check you at your last visit to him since doing so may put you into labor, introduce infection, break your water- plus he has more patients to see so time is also a factor, and he doesn't want you to be in any discomfort. from my experience (I have had 4 children)They do check you only at the first 2 visits or so.

An ultrasound is usually done when the baby is small enough to see everything (aprx 16-18 weeks gestation) and then again if needed at maybe 35 weeks. They don't do it for fun, it is a medical procedure and gets done as standars issue now. But they do not give you an untrasound because you want one, there has to be a reason. If the baby is too big or your pelvis is too small, they will check.

If there is a genetic issue or if you are thinking about aborting a fetus that is not healthy you have to speak to your Dr before things get too advanced

a scan is generally booked at about 7 weeks to confirm pregnancy, exclude ectopic or molar pregnancies, confirm cardiac pulsation and measure the crown-rump length for dating.A second scan is performed at 18 to 20 weeks mainly to look for congenital malformations, when the fetus is large enough for an accurate survey of the fetal anatomy. multiple pregnancies can be firmly diagnosed and dates and growth can also be assessed. Placental position is also determined. Further scans may be necessary if abnormalities are suspected.

earlier screening scan at around 11-14 weeks to measure the fetal nuchal translucency and to evaluate the fetal nasal bone (and more recently, to detect tricuspid regurgitation) to aid in the diagnosis of Down Syndrome. Some centers will do blood test biochemical screening at the same visit.
Further scans may sometimes be done at around 32 weeks or later to evaluate fetal size (to estimate the fetal weight) and assess fetal growth. Or to follow up on possible abnormalities seen at an earlier scan. Placental position is further verified. The most common reason for having more scans in the later part of pregnancy is fetal growth retardation. Doppler scans may also be necessary in that situation.

Check with your obgyn's policy and how they normally handle a pregnancy. They are all different. Many women I know were examined each time they visited the doctor and personally my obgyn feels that pelvic exams introduce the chance of developing infection. Usually there are two or three ultrasounds depending on your insurance, your age, if there are complications, if you have health problems, or there is a history genetic problems in your family or your husbands. Call and talk to or get an appointment to talk to your doctor, assistant or nurse and discuss any issues you are unsure of. It is an excellent idea to write down any questions that you may have before talking to them. When we get nervous or focused on one issue we tend to forget what we wanted to say-too much info to process. And remember for thousands of years women gave birth without ultrasound and obgyn's. What you are doing isn't a modern miracle, God made us to conceive and give birth without any of the modern technology we have today. Eve gave birth with only Adam by her side and was fine. What is going on with your body isn't a disease that can be controlled by a doctor. If you are near term and the baby is ready to come out, it will. If you are young, healthy, and feel fine then you probably are fine. Just relax and calmly discuss your concerns-I'm sure your doctor isn't neglecting you. An ultrasound isn't a guarantee that you will deliver vaginally nor is it a guarantee that your child will be healthy, its just a good predicting tool. Nothing is final until you give birth.

My doctor started checking me at 37 weeks to see if I was dialating. I only had 1 songram, at 20 weeks, to check on the baby. You need to talk to your doctor about what his policies are. Every doctor is different, but you shold have some say in what goes on.

my dr started checking when i was about 37 or 38 weeks to see if i was effacing...if you are a "small" person they may do an ultrasound...or if you have gestational diabetes (like i did) the baby may be larger than normal...many doctors only do one ultrasound during the entire pregnancy. if you have concerns though ask your doctor
