Its a "OLA" or Mexican Wave
A wave effect formed when crowds in stadia rise up and down from their seats in succession.
Origin

Given that name when the phenomenon came to a mass audience during the football World Cup held in Mexico in 1986. It had originated somewhat earlier, probably in US colleges. This piece from The New York Times, Oct. 1984, pre-dates the football tournament:

"This undulating human wave ... apparently became popular at University of Washington football games a few years ago."

The 'apparently' there indicates that the N.Y. Times had no proof. There are strong representations from supporters of that view though, who claim 'The Wave' was first performed on October 31, 1981 at an American football game at the University of Washington's Husky Stadium. I can find no independent corroboration of that - which isn't to say it didn't happen; just that the jury is still out.

In a stadium, ie. a football stadium, a section of the crowd stands up whilst the remainder stays seated, as the movement comes towards another section, the first sits down and the next stands up and so on around the stadium. The time standing is only 2 or 3 seconds. The sight gives the impression of a wave going through the stadium seating...........
