Herpes is a virus that is in saliva, and other body fluids. Kissing exchanges saliva between participants, and so any kissing with a person with herpes can transfer the virus.
The deal is, though, that herpes virus can live in your body for years, without symptoms. You might think you did not catch it.
The reason for this is because it takes a certain amount of the virus to overwhelm your body's immune system which protects you aganist infection, and thus cause symptoms, such as sores in the mouth. If you just kiss once, you have been exposed to the virus, but maybe not in sufficient quantity to cause sores right away.
The virus can live in your body and replicate itself until it is in sufficient quantity to cause symptoms, and it may take years.
Herpes virus can cause whole body disease, and it infects nerves. Shingles is a very painful skin itch and burning that can come on whenever your body is stressed with some other illness.
If I had a choice, I would never knowingly kiss a person who had herpes, period.
Herpes virus is like other sexually transmitted diseases, in that infected persons may not even know they are infected, or they don't inform their prospective partners if they do know. Either way, the new partner gets infected, because the new partner was ignorant of the danger, and careless about condoms. And even condoms are not 100% prevention.
Of course, one has to have compassion for the person with herpes symptons and signs. How can one in good conscience chance passing such a horrible disease on to someone else? And such a good conscience will inevitably prevent that person from forming a full relationship with another for fear of causing disease in another.
So I ask you, is one kiss so important?
you Betcha!
