If you are wanting a fish in a bowl, Beta is a really good choice. They come in beautiful colors and they are very easy to care for. Gold fish are a lot harder to keep alive. A tank with a filter is necessary to keep most fish healthy. Beta have the ability to go to the surface to get air to breathe when the water conditions aren't so good. It is still important to keep their water clean but they aren't as sensitive to water conditions as some other types of fish.
They have some really neat bowls for Beta as well. I have one that is a globe hanging on a hook, kind of like a shepherds hook, and it has a light. It is kind of like a lamp with a fish in it.

The thing about Beta's is you can put two in the same tank only for a little while to get one pregnant, however you can not keep other fish with Beta's because they will fight.
Beta's are fish that have to have a tank all to themselves.
There are other fish you can get so that your tank feels and looks like a thing of nature, also adding plants and items into the tank will help ....Even the sound of the water is relaxing.

Well if you're a beginner then a betta is probably the most low maintenance fish you can get. They can easily live in a bowl..just change the water once a week and make sure you use a water conditioner. Some people may tell you that if you put a plant in the bowl they will live off the roots and you won't need to feed them...this is not true.Get betta food..I have found that they like the pellets the best.Oh and you can only have ONE betta per bowl..they will fight.

A couple of myths that were posted here to clear up.
You CAN keep a single male betta with other fish, for instance mine is very happy in my 55 gallon along with platties, neons, tetras, and some barbs (oh and snails)
You CANNOT keep a male betta with another male betta
You should not keep a male and felmale betta together, you can but I don't advise it. The can kill each and she can do a lot of damage to his pretty fins if she doesn't kill him. If you want to breed the better way it to put then in small tanks NEXT to each other untill they show signs they are ready to breed.
Those little tiny bowls and tanks that hold a cup or so of water are meant to be TEMPORARY homes for a betta and to keep a betta in one full-time is inhumane. If you plan to have a full time betta then you should have a full time home WITH filtration, at least 1 gallon for a lone betta.
Otherwise a betta is a very easy pet to keep. Just please make sure your water is treated and never keep a betta in a tiny bowl full-time. Some countries have even BANNED bowls for fish because they are inhumane.

If you want to complement your room with nature get a plant. If you want a pet that you will have to take care of by giving it a big enough home so it can swim around, feed it, cleaning up after it and make it better when its sick then go ahead and get a betta.

If you get more than one beta be sure to keep them away from each other to prevent them from being angry at each other all of the time.
However, it depends on what color your room is. There are other types of fish that come in different colors.

You really should do more research about fish before deciding what fish you want. There a lot is more to it than color.
Note that the betta's you'll find in the store are mostly red, and/or blue. Hobbyist breeders has bred some pretty wild colors, but you generally will not find them in stores.

Yes, BUT only keep one by itself. Also, some people put them in small containers...I like to put them in bigger ones, I want the fish to freely swim around. I know that they prefer tight spaces(but I recommend a bigger container with plastic plants so they can hide). Unlike goldfish, they don't need air filters(coz they can't make a bubble nest for that). Just make sure room never gets cold.
I recommend you buying a Betta Fish (Siamese Fighting Fish) guidebook...they sell them at petstores cheaply. Also, betta food(normally in tiny pellets)...not the tropical and goldfish food flakes.

it would be good. but dont put any other fish (not even more beta fish) in the tank with it. the beta fish are very agressive. so if your going to get another fish then just get another tank or bowl.

Yes; they are very hardy and colorful. Do not just put them in a bowl with nothing in it. Put some sand and plant; it makes them more active. Make sure you change 10% of the water once a week with declorinated water.
