When one of methane’s hydrogen atoms is replaced by a second carbon atom, the newcompound is called ethane. The molecular formula for ethane is C2H6.

It COULD be done actually, but the yield will be super low.

React methane with Br2 under UV radiation, the product should be methyl bromide. Then the product react methyl bromide with NaCN (okey, I have no idea how to react these two efficiently 'cause I dont know whether methyl bromide is in gaseous phase at room temp, and try NOT to use HCN, that's extremely poisonous), this will give methylnitril (methyl cyanide). Boil the product in acidic water to form ethanol.

Final two steps, react ethanol with concentrate H2SO4, the product should be ethene, then react with hydrogen gas under Nickel catalyst and there u go, ethane.

Okey, if u're not serious, the fastest way to do this, remove one m from the word "methane", and there u go "ethane" ^^

React with HCN first...it will add cyanide ion to it and will increase the carbon chain by one. Now react with a reducing agent such as KMNO4. It should yield ethane. Careful condition control in required to perform this experiment and don't attempt it without a teacher by your side.

methane has only one carbon atom and ethane two carbon atoms. It cannot be done.

I think by making it react with Hydrogen Chloride(HCl)

You just take off the m.

If u used a pencil,erase the 'm',if its a biro,cancel it.

remove the m

you add one more carbon which adds three more hydrogens.
